Taking a journey into the Mayan underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal, or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre”, First take a 2 1/2 hour drive and enjoy the natial scenery from Belize City to San Ignacio. Here we take another 1 hour drive to enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. From this point on you are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave.
The hike includes three stream crossings. To access the cave, you will need to swim across a small spring-fed pool with the assistance of a rope and wade into knee-high water into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access to the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics and the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”.
This tour is about 3 hours in the cave under the instruction of our experienced guides.
ATM was used from 700 to 900 A.D. and discovered by British military in 1980s. After surveys and researches, it was opened to the public in 2000s. You can see many untouched excavated articles.
Enter the exciting world of rivers disappearing into the underworld as you float on inner tubes with only your headlamp to light your way. Floating past side windows that filter the jungle light through the mist as you swirl around stalagmites jutting from the river and stalactites looming from above. Float past underground waterfalls then into the crystal cathedral, a spiritual center to the ancient Maya.s.
Mountain Pine Ridge has a waterfall of 30 meters and its downstream has some natural pools and glittering crystal caves. It’s very thrilling to go tubing in the dark cave.
There are only a few places in the world where the elusive manatee are found. One of those places is in Belize. Start the day by making our way to Swallow Caye where we will see the endangered West Indian Manatee in their natural habitat from the boat. (No swimming with the Manatee).
Then head on to Goff’s Caye where sand and coral surround this mysterious island to snorkel the reef, thereafter have lunch and after pull out your beach towels and relax under the swaying coconut palms on the pristine white beaches.
